GENERAL MIDI MAP AND 16 FREE SOUNDS FOR YAMAHA SY-55 / TG-55 !!!
SY-55 MIDI Voices
All these voices are saved as OctaMED (version 3) MSGs. So they should work
on other versions of OctaMED which support MSGs, or perhaps on other programs
which can send SysEx data. They were written on an SY-55 but may work on the
module TG-55 version, but I'm not sure.
(Addition from [Ed]: OctaMED Professional v5 handles them just fine -
available from AM/FM at £29 - see AM/FM Product Catalogue elsewhere in the
magazine).
To actually use the files you should link your SY-55 upto your Amiga via MIDI
i.e. the MIDI out of the Amiga to the MIDI in of the SY-55. Now, put the
SY-55 in Voice mode (as there are no MULTI set-ups on this disk) and leave
MIDI Bulk In Protect ON (it's in the Utilities page). It is wise to leave
this on in the case of any dodgy signals being sent. Ok, now don't be worried
about sending SysEx to your synth, it doesn't overwrite anything, so you
shouldn't lose any important work if MIDI protect is ON. Load up Octamed and
load in one of the files (click on the file name and then on "LOAD MSG").
Now, go to the MIDI panal and you should see the data in the large window at
the bottom. To send the General MIDI drum pattern the synth should be set to
voice 63 or 64 but to any other voice for the other MSGs. To send the data
make sure MIDI ACTIVE is on and then click on send. Your SY-55 should say
"Bulk Receiving" (in fact it will be flashing) now press EXIT. Now you can
play your sound using the keyboard. You will notice that the SY-55 thinks the
MIDI Dump is an edited version of the current voice, so if you want to forget
the sound, just change the patch number, else you can save it like any other
edited voice.
Here is a complete list of the voices:-
2unlimited.RaveChord A rave chord basically.
Ambient A soft bass line at the bottom, swooshing sea noises and then a reverby horn solo at the top.
Church organ What it says really.
DarkHouse Play one note at once, a minor triad with bass.
FlugelHorn Again, what it says.
Harp A soft harp sound.
Piano Flanged A Honky-Tonk Piano!!!
Sub Bass Excellent deep bass you feel, not hear.
Acid Bass This one's the opposite way round!
Arpeggio A Rave arpeggio voice, similar to that Felix song.
Computers Very Jarre/Alien Breed. Use the MOD wheel to impress!
Distort MEGA Wierdo How to show off your synth, hold the notes for ages.
Guitar Tune A plane organ sound for tuning guitars to your SY-55.
Music.Blast Bass at the left, play triads in the right.
Overdriver Bass plus distorted guitar, very nice.
Rave1Chord Techno!!
and
THE SY-55 GENERAL MIDI MAP!!!!
Really useful for playing AM/FM
or MIDI Files.
Obviously the SY-55 isn't kitted out with all the percussion sounds needed for
General MIDI, but it does work. If you have a sound card you can add extra
percussion sounds if you have them.
These are some of the sounds I've created for the SY-55 and if you like them I
could send in some more. (Please do!! -Ed) I've just done my A-levels and
was the first person to do Music on the keyboard, so I have a full set of
voices and a drum sequence for a completely solo version of John Miles'
~Music~, and that didn't half take some programming!!! I hope you enjoy the
sounds (it's amazing what creativity some new sounds give) and would love to
hear from anyone with sound collections of their own.

Additions from [Ed]: Thanks a billion for the sounds Richard! If you want to
use them, they are stored in a self-extracting LHA-package in the Utilities
directory of this disk. You should just be positioned on a disk/harddisk with
enough free space, then simply type the path and file-name which is:
AMFM16:Utilties/SY-SOUNDS.RUN
(enter). Then just watch as the different
sound-files are extracted and decompressed. If you are unable to do this,
there's a more detailed description of how to do it in the "Using AM/FM
article".
